The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday said the Election Commission (EC) should have adapted to challenges posed by COVID-19 and continued its operations to prepare to hold the General Election as soon as patient numbers were brought under control. Speaking to media at the SLPP Head Office, former Parliamentarian D.V Chanaka said in their view the commission has shown a lack of preparedness to hold the election amidst COVID-19 mitigation measures, insisting that was the responsibility of the commission.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday expressed condolences on the demise of former Minister and Ceylon Workers Congress leader Arumugam Thondaman. In a tweet, the Premier said: “Just a few hours ago we sat together reminiscing memories we shared! I am shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely passing of my dear friend and colleague, Hon. Arumugan Thondaman. My deepest condolences go out to his family. You will be missed dear friend.”
