Constitutional amendment proposals to Cabinet today

First Cabinet meeting since appointment of 22 new Cabinet ministers
Proposals to reintroduce 19th Amendment to be presented to Cabinet

The proposals for the 21st Amendment to the Constitution aimed at reducing the powers of the Executive President are to be presented to Cabinet when it meets today.

This will be the first Cabinet meeting since President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed 22 new Ministers on 22 April.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has mooted constitutional changes amidst the growing anti-Government protests calling for the President and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to step down.

Political groups in Parliament last week handed in their constitutional amendment proposals to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena last week.

Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena said the Government would study all the proposals and present a draft Bill to Cabinet before it is tabled in Parliament.
