Teachers, principals must report for duty after second jab: Edu Minister

Teachers and principals will have to start their teaching duties after once they are given the second vaccination to shield against COVID-19 by next week, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardana said.

He told the Daily Mirror that the majority of the teachers and principals have been given the second dose of the vaccine as the vaccination drive come to an end by next week.

However, no sudden decision could be taken to re-open schools until we are assured of the health Ministry recommendation he said.

"Discussions are underway with the health ministry in this regard as to which grades should start first. But it is difficult to get a decision with the current pandemic situation in the country," the Minister said.

However, before reopening the schools, an extensive cleaning campaign should be launched for the safety of the children, teachers and other school staff.

Teachers and principals can return to their duties after the second jab according to guidelines issued by the Health Ministry. However, the teachers and principals can continue with their activities online.

However, there is more to be done to reopen schools under the health recommendations, Minister Gunawardana added. (Daily Mirror)
