Sri Lanka’s electricity tariffs are to be increased to unprecedented level along with unannounced power cuts in several areas in the country despite Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera assurances that no such actions on the cards.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has granted a general amnesty for 512 prisoners who have been serving jail terms for minor offences, to mark the Independence Day which falls tomorrow (4).

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) will be imposing daily power cuts countrywide shortly, due to limited rainfall in catchment areas and the refusal of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation to supply fuel for thermal power generation to meet the increased demand for power, CEB sources said.
