In a situation where Sri Lanka has decided to import oxygen, Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr Hemantha Herath said Sri Lanka cannot rely fully on foreign countries.
Dr Herath said it's because the situation in foreign countries was also grim that they may be hesitant to provide oxygen to Sri Lanka.
"The oxygen reserves of the country had almost depleted. With the Delta variant becoming predominant in Sri Lanka as in many other countries, the demand for oxygen has equally risen,” he pointed out.
Having said that, he stressed that they had provided all the hospitals with oxygen production machines to meet the requirement.
“However, there is always a limit for everything. We are trying our level best to balance the situation while making sure that the demand for oxygen is met in the country,” he added.
The COVID-19 infections and fatalities are surging in the country at unprecedented numbers wreaking havoc on health sector. (Daily Mirror)
